동북부의 많은 명품코스를 설계한 그는 여기가 가장 애착이 간다고 했다. 싸인받고 사진까지 찍었는데, 그가 누군지 알길이 없었다. 그때는.... 나중에 구글에서 그의얼굴를 확인했다.
Scotland Run, Harbor Pines, Blue Heron Pines, New York CC, Architects, The Links at Unionvale... 모두 그의 작품이다. 그분은 지금 Rutgers 대학에서 강의도하고, 회사를 차려서 많은 코스를 설계/Remodeling 하고 있다.

나역시 여기가 가장 허접한듯 하면서, 썰렁하지만, 진짜 유니크한 골프장으로 인정한다.
북부 뉴저지의 Architects 처럼 이곳에도 유럽의유명한 홀들을 복제해서 18홀을 만들었다. Ireland, Scotland St.Andrew 홀들을 만날 수 있다.

2009년 3월 쌀쌀하던 그해. 동료들과 이박삼김 투어를 하던 날이다. 오전에 이미 바로 길건너 " Harbor Pines GC"에서 라운딩을 마치고 김밥먹고 이곳에 도착! 모두들 표정이~ '어? 이게 골프장?'

Harbor Pine 역시 Stephen Kay가 설계한 명품코스이다. Luxury Club House에 가지런히 아름드린 송백들이 홀들을 에워싼, 아름다운 코스 ...... 그에 비해 나무 한그루 보이지 않는 들판에 클럽하우스도 허접한 Emerald Links는 무지 없어 보인다.

하지만.... 코스의 진가는 공을 칠때마다 드러난다.

Hole 1
432 Yards, Par 4Royal Portrush No. 1, Northern Ireland

The first hole of the McCullough's Emerald Golf Links was inspired by the first hole at Royal Portrush in

Ireland

. Set up perfectly for a starting hole, the fairway bunker is on the left side, rather than the right where the average golfer tends to hit the ball, especially on the first tee. The right side of the hole has a fairway to the right of the green, making for an easier approach. The original hole at Royal Portrush has a greenside sand bunker smack in front of the green. We felt this was a little too difficult for a first hole, so McCullough's features a bunker of grass instead of sand. The putting surface is rather simple, without the more severe contours that the golfer will experience on other holes, giving a good opportunity to warm up for the round.

Hole 2206 Yards, Par 3Biarritz No. 6, France

McCullough's Hole #2 is a rendition of the famous sixth Biarritz hole in

France

, and has been redone many times by C.B. Macdonald and Charles Banks. The Biarritz Hole has a very long green from front to back with a very deep and large valley in its center. Similar holes to this can be seen at Connecticut?s Yale Golf Club and at the Mid Ocean Club in Bermuda. The original hole had bunkers on both sides of the green, but again, we decided not to penalize the golfer so early in the round. The only bunkers, therefore, are on the left side of the green.
